Seasonal reset: the autumn edit

A gentle checklist for turning the home toward the darker half of the year — warmth, light, and fewer things.

Each autumn I walk through the house and ask a single question in every room: what would make this place kinder to be in when the days are short?

Warmth

  • Blankets out of storage, aired, folded where they'll actually be used.
  • Draughty windows and doors noted and fixed.
  • Summer linen washed and put away.

Light

  • One more lamp in the room that feels darkest.
  • Candles gathered in one drawer, matches beside them.
  • Curtains cleaned so they let in every bit of afternoon sun.

Fewer things

  • One bag per room for things that didn't earn their place this year.
  • Seasonal objects swapped rather than added — something comes out when something goes in.

Small pleasures

Pears in a bowl, branches in a jug, a candle lit at dusk. The season feels different when it's welcomed rather than endured.
